Rich Hill Expresses Interest In Playing For The Boston Red Sox Again

The Boston Red Sox faced a setback recently when their new star pitcher, Lucas Giolito, sustained a partial UCL tear and flexor strain, likely ruling him out for the season.

On a positive note, another pitcher with a strong history in the Red Sox organization is keen on reuniting with the team, and he is open to a reasonable deal.

During an interview on the Red Sox radio show, veteran free agent Rich Hill, who turned 44 this week, was asked if he would consider pitching for Boston this season.

“Yes, I am definitely interested,” Hill said. “Especially from the player’s perspective.”

If Hill were to sign with the Red Sox, it would mark his fourth stint with the team during his 19-year MLB career. He previously played in Boston’s bullpen from 2010 to 2012, started four games in 2015, and made 26 starts in 2022.

While bringing in a nearly 44-year-old pitcher with a modest 8-14 record and 5.41 ERA from the past season is not a direct replacement for Giolito, Hill could potentially offer his experience at a discounted price as he is currently a free agent.

Hill, who has played for 13 different MLB teams, one short of the league record, could also provide guidance to younger pitchers like Garrett Whitlock and Tanner Houck on the Red Sox roster.

Although Hill is enthusiastic about another opportunity with the Red Sox, the team’s president of baseball operations, Craig Breslow, is content with their current pitching options.

In a conversation with Boston’s NESN broadcast during a spring training game, Breslow mentioned, “We’re assessing the situation and the timeline ahead of us. We believe in the pitchers we have and will allow them the chance to secure rotation spots and bond as a staff.”

If Hill signs with the Red Sox or another team, he would be the only active MLB player born in 1980, although the Red Sox may not prioritize helping him reach this milestone.
