Jon Gruden Emerged As “Wild Card” Candidate To Become The Next Head Coach For Big Ten College Football Program

It has been just over two years since Jon Gruden stepped down as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after his involvement in an email scandal.

Now, it seems that the former Super Bowl-winning head coach may be a potential candidate for a significant NCAA football program with an open coaching position.

On Sunday, the Indiana Hoosiers terminated head coach Tom Allen after eight years in the role. The Hoosiers (3-9) have experienced three consecutive losing seasons, with Allen holding a disappointing 33-49-0 record as their head coach.

According to a report from Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Gruden is considered “a major wild card candidate” for the Hoosiers’ head coach vacancy:

“One major wild card candidate that could get involved in the search is former NFL coach Jon Gruden. Gruden, who won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 39, won 117 total games as an NFL head coach, but resigned as the Las Vegas Raiders coach in 2021 after an NFL investigation uncovered emails Gruden sent from 2011 to 2018 that used racist, misogynistic and homophobic language.”

Gruden coached the Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders from 1998 to 2001 before moving to the Buccaneers. Known as “Chucky,” he led the Bucs to a Super Bowl 37 title in his first year with Tampa Bay and coached them from 2002 to 2008.

After a decade away from coaching, Gruden returned to lead the Raiders in 2018 on a 10-year deal. He resigned during the 2021 season.
