South Carolina’s live rooster mascot is about to debut a name change and social media is going crazy over it.
South Carolina’s live mascot, Sir Big Spur, will receive a new nickname before the start of the 2022 college football season. The change is because of a disagreement between the bird’s original owners and new owners.
The original owners trimmed the rooster’s comb — the red, fleshy area on its head — to make the bird look more like a fighting Gamecock. The Clarks have opted to keep the comb intact, citing the health benefits to the bird.
A few suggestions have been tossed around on social media and they include Cluck Norris, Marco Pollo and Cock Commander.
South Carolina’s legal team is advising against the Gamecocks using the name Sir Big Spur moving forward because of some ?college football bickering.
The State has some suggestions for a new name, including Cluck Norris, Marco Pollo and Cock Commander https://t.co/tjJsh83bwg— Matt Baker (@MBakerTBTimes) August 25, 2022
As expected, social media went nuts over these names:
If USC doesn’t name that rooster Cock Commander, I’ll lose all respect for the society that is college football. (And if named anything else, they should be immediately removed from @danabeers top 7) Those are the rules. Also, #WreckEm ?⚫️? https://t.co/z06yIQjjVb

“And you can barely hear South Carolina’s live rooster mascot, Cock Commander, as 1999 techno hit Sandstorm fills a half empty Williams-Brice Stadium and echoes through the surrounding parking lots”

“Cock Commander” is one of those risky Twitter searches that @J810Anderson recently learned so much about. https://t.co/pJ4MW6gnk2

The Clarks, for now, have changed the Twitter handle of the rooster simply to “mascot.”
