Alabama Crimson Tide’s Deputy Athletic Director Arrested for Domestic Violence

Over the weekend, Matt Self, the deputy athletic director of the Alabama Crimson Tide, was arrested in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on charges of third-degree domestic violence. He was placed on a 24-hour hold and his bail is set at $300.

This isn’t the first time Self has been in trouble with the law; he was previously charged with misdemeanor DUI in 2010, paying the fee and receiving a suspended 10-day sentence, all while still working at the University of Alabama.

In response to the arrest, a spokesperson for the Athletics Department of the University of Alabama has stated, “Alabama Athletics is aware of this incident. We take such matters seriously and will continue to gather more information to address this personnel matter.”

Self has been with the university for over a decade, starting in the sports compliance office in 2008 and rising to head of the department in 2016. As of May 2021, he has been the football administrator and reports directly to the university’s athletic director, Greg Byrne.
